Whippets are naturally slim dogs, but they still require a nutritious diet to maintain a healthy weight. Despite being a generally healthy breed, some pet owners may incorrectly feed their Whippets, resulting in health complications. Check out our Whippet diet and feeding chart to ensure you’re not one of them.

How Much Should I Feed My Whippet Each Day?

The amount you feed your Whippet will depend on its life stage and activity levels. This is only a guide, and the amount you feed will vary depending on your Whippet’s specific dietary needs.

Puppies

Whippet puppies require about 990 calories a day as they are still growing. Here is a breakdown of the amount of food to feed your Whippet puppy:

  • Four to five months: 1.75 – 2.3 cups daily over two meals.
  • Six to eight months: 1.3 – 2 cups daily over two meals.
  • Nine to eleven months: 2.3 – 2.5 cups daily over two meals.

Adults

Your adult dog will require about 894 calories a day. That is about 2.3 to 3.5 cups of food daily, spread over two meals.

Seniors

Don’t change your dog’s diet too much to ensure older, healthy dogs. If possible, stick with the same brand you have always fed, but get their senior dog meal plan and follow the instructions on the food.

Pregnant

Increase your pregnant Whippet’s food by 10% at the start of her pregnancy, and increase it slightly each week. Towards the end of her gestation period, she will require about three times as much food as she was pregnant.

Raw, Fresh, or Commercial Food: Which is Best for My Dog’s Diet?

A raw food diet can benefit your Whippet, as it is free from preservatives, GMOs, artificial flavours and fillers. That being said, many naysayers agree that a raw diet increases the chance of your Whippet contracting salmonella – a risk you should consider.

Dry food produced by a quality dog food manufacturer can be just as beneficial (and more affordable) than a raw, natural diet. What you feed your Whippet is up to you and your dog’s preferences.

FAQs

Can I give my Whippet treats?

Yes, Whippets are generally food-motivated and love treats, especially during training. Make sure to give healthy treats in moderation and factor them into your feeding amounts, as Whippets can become overweight.

What should a Whippet not eat?

  • Avocado
  • Chocolate
  • Broccoli
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Milk and other dairy products

Are Whippets fussy eaters?

Whippets can be fussy eaters, so you and your dog must work together to find food they enjoy. Try changing your dog’s food’s flavour (not the brand) frequently to keep it interesting.

How much water do Whippets need?

A Whippet will require between two and three cups of water daily, but always leave water out! Generally, your Whippet will need to drink around 100ml of water per day per kg of their body weight.

Final Thoughts on feeding a Whippet

You must feed your Whippet a healthy, balanced meal that supports your dog’s digestion and will result in a shiny dog coat (as the sheen of a dog’s coat is often an indicator of their health). The feeding guide above is just that – a guide – and you should always consult your vet with any questions regarding feeding your Whippet.
