All dogs shed. Shedding is part of any dog’s natural body cycle. Hair follicles have to allow new hair a chance to grow, by letting go of old dead hairs.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are one of the most surprising family pets. You wouldn’t have guessed that they’re so affectionate by looking at their stocky, muscular exterior.
Luckily, their short hair is exactly as low maintenance as it appears to be.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s minimal shedding is perfect for potential dog owners who don’t want to find dog hairs all over their furniture or clothes.
There will be some shedding because that’s just what happens with dog hair. However, a Staffy’s short coat produces not as much fur as many other dog breeds.
The Staffordshire Bull Terriers’ score for shedding is ranked at 5/10, because of their low- moderate levels of shedding.
This is not true for all dogs, but most dogs who do shed seasonally do so either during the warmer months or during the autumn and spring seasons.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers experience only slight changes in hair loss throughout the year, but they shed all year-round. They’re single-coated dogs and have no thick undercoat that protects them against the cold during winter, so they don’t ‘blow coat’ during the warmer months. However, the amount of shedding does slightly change depending on the season.
Although Staffordshires ordinarily are not heavy shedders, a Staffy’s coat sheds more heavily during the autumn and spring seasons. This happens as they grow new coats that will help them better adjust to the changing winter and summer temperatures.
Adult dogs generally shed more than puppies, because they’re bigger in size and have larger amounts of dog hair on their bodies. However, putting their size aside, Staffy puppies do their fair share of shedding.
All puppies are born into a soft single coat that helps with the thermoregulation of their tiny bodies. This coat is then shed when the puppy reaches 4-6 months, to allow for their thicker adult coat to come in.
During this period, your Staffy puppy will shed a lot more. It may seem like there is excessive shedding, but as long as your puppy is healthy and it doesn’t carry on into their adult years, all is well.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a sleek, short coat that is close to the skin. Believe it or not, the hair on this dog is less than 1 inch long.
Their smooth, low-maintenance coat is easy to brush or remove dirt from. It also comes in beautiful colours of red, fawn, white, black, blue, and white.
All dogs shed, and you’re inevitably going to have it deal with that. However, there are some things you can do to make sure they don’t shed excessively.
Have you heard the phrase “you are what you eat”, well that also applies to your Staffy.
Their diet affects the health of their coat. If your Staffy’s dog fur is looking dry, colourless, and falling out frequently, and your dog’s skin is dry, you should start by making sure to feed them high-quality dog foods and check for allergic reactions and irritated skin.
You should also keep them healthy with regular exercise.
Staffordshires have a smooth coat that needs regular brushing, and bathing. Brushing should be done on a weekly basis to remove dirt and dead hair. This will keep their hair on the brush and off the floor.
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but some will trigger your allergies more. It also depends on what allergies you have.
Many people think that short-coated dogs are a safer option for those with allergies. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Staffordshire bull terriers still drop dander and fur, and touching them could give you a rash.
A Staffy might not be the best option for you if you have contact allergies that are easily triggered by dander.
Many Staffy owners don’t have to do a lot of grooming, as this dog breed has an easy-care coat.
You might find more hair lying around the house during the spring and autumn months, but it’s nothing that a good brushing routine and a vacuum cleaner can’t fix.
