This miniature bulldog has been recognised by the American Kennel Club since 1897 and is known for its soft, smooth coat, cute bat ears, and is full of energy.

These small dogs have a life span of around 10-12 years and have few negative qualities. If they do ever misbehave, it will only be for innocent reasons and never just to be naughty.

French Bulldog Main Personality Traits

A French bulldog’s temperament is mainly positive. These beautiful dogs have often been called playful, friendly and sociable. Not to mention they also want to be the star of the show, trying to catch as much attention as they can.

Playful

French bulldogs aren’t your typical outdoor dog and don’t have a whole lot of energy when it comes to long walks, but if they get the opportunity to play with other dogs or people, they’ll have energy for hours.

Sometimes their energy can come across as aggressive, but they are simply bullish and unsophisticated dogs that love to play with their family members.

They are a great fit for dog sports if given effective teaching by a good dog trainer.

Friendly and Sociable

French bulldogs are brave and curious and will make an effort to get to know anyone new who enters their home.

This makes the French bulldog breed perfect as companion dogs, as there is nothing they’d rather do than whatever you’re doing. Plenty of play and attention will make for a healthier dog in any case.

Their friendly nature makes grooming French bulldogs a breeze.

Attention seeking

Frenchies like to sleep and laze about as much as you’ll let them, but when they’re up and about, they will crave your attention.

Once they wake up, watch them make a beeline for you just to see what you’re getting up to.

French Bulldogs and Your Family

French bulldogs make a fantastic addition to any family, and you’ll find them quickly settling into your home regardless of your living situation.

Can French Bulldogs Live With Other Pets?

If your French bulldog puppy is given the right socialisation, it should get on well with any pet.

The French bulldog dog breed is a sweet, harmless breed that, if anything, is more likely to be on the receiving end of violence from other animals.

Can French Bulldogs Live With Kids?

Few things would make your kids happier than bringing home a Frenchie puppy. Frenchies are one of the most popular dog breeds when it comes to family pets, and their relationship with kids is an obvious reason.

Having a Frenchie in the house will be like adding an extra kid to the mix, one who’s full of life, never in a bad mood, and always up for play or a cuddle.

Do French Bulldogs Have Any Behavioural Issues?

Frenchies are generally well-behaved dogs, but their positive energy can sometimes display itself negatively.

When attempting to engage in play, they can seem aggressive, but this is simply their energy and how it shows itself. They can also be clingy, so expect them to jump up as soon as you do and follow you around regardless of where you’re going.

Responsible and reputable breeders should ensure your new puppy is from good pet parents that display agreeable, good behaviour.

FAQs

Can French bulldogs be left alone?

Your French Bulldog is more disposed to getting separation anxiety than other dogs, but this can be managed.

If you need to leave your home for an extended period, try not to make a big deal out of it.

Try leaving the TV or the radio on to give your dog some company and prevent them from feeling lonely. If you’re uncomfortable leaving them alone, try getting a pet sitter to put your mind at ease.

Do French Bulldogs bark a lot?

French bulldogs won’t bark compulsively and will generally only get vocal if they’re distressed or trying to alert you to something.

Are French Bulldogs active dogs?

Frenchies aren’t typical outdoor dogs but will need at least one walk a day, supplemented by plenty of play.

They are a brachycephalic breed as well as likely to suffer from other genetic health problems like hip dysplasia, so don’t over-exercise them, as French bulldog health can be negatively affected by too much effort.

Final Thoughts on French Bulldog Temperament & Personality

Frenchies are wonderful, agreeable dogs who love making new friends. Whether you’re buying a puppy from the pet store or adopting an adult dog, you’ll find that not all dogs have the same winning combination of confidence, affection, and a love for play.
