Border Collies are active dogs since they were originally bred as herding dogs and, according to Stanley Coren, are the most intelligent dog breed. Despite being hardy animals, a Border Collie dog can suffer from certain health issues. So what are some health problems you can expect from this breed?

Border Collies are a relatively healthy breed, but there are a few common health issues these dogs are predisposed to. Border Collies can experience:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Epilepsy
  • Collie Eye Anomaly

Read on to find out more about Border Collie health problems and how you can protect your Border Collie puppy from painful disorders.

Are Border Collies Prone To Health Problems?

Border Collies are extremely active dogs and are generally very healthy. Some individuals struggle with genetic health concerns or geriatric diseases just like other dogs. If you’re worried about buying a pup that is predisposed to health issues, ensure you purchase one from a reputable breeder who does routine blood testing prior to breeding dogs.

Common Health Issues For Border Collies

Here are three common health problems that affect this wonderful dog breed.

1. Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a common inherited disease in this athletic and acrobatic dog. It results in the hip joint not forming properly. This condition causes the hip joint to lose structure and grind when the Border Collie is walking.

Symptoms of hip dysplasia

  • Limping and noticeable pain in the hip
  • Difficulty standing up or going upstairs
  • Decreased activity levels
  • Decreased motion in the hips
  • Loss of back leg muscles
  • Treating hip dysplasia

You can treat it with certain lifestyle modifications, such as changing the dog’s diet and exercise regime. In extreme cases, surgery will be required.

2. Epilepsy

Epilepsy is very common in this breed. It is a type of neurological disorder that cause seizures. Seizures can be a result of tumours, genetic diseases, physical trauma or exposure to toxins. In some cases, the cause of epileptic seizures is unknown; these are called idiopathic seizures.

Symptoms of epilepsy

  • Spasms
  • Convulsing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Twitches
  • Treating epilepsy
  • Epilepsy is a life-long condition; however, it can be managed with medication.

3. Collie Eye Anomaly

Collie Eye Anomalies (CEA) are hereditary conditions that affect Border Collies. This condition is present from birth and can be screened for with a genetic test.

CEA causes abnormal eye development. Many Border Collies have this condition with no symptoms, while others can completely lose their vision.

Symptoms of CEA

  • Cloudy eyes
  • Small eyes
  • Sunken eyes
  • Treating CEA

Unfortunately, there is no cure for CEA, but surgery can help to minimise the effects of this condition.

Should I Insure My Border Collie?

Insuring your Border Collie is a great idea, as it’s better to be prepared. Here are some reasons to insure your Border Collie:

Your healthy dog may suddenly develop inherited health conditions.

  • A working dog can get injured while herding animals.
  • A sporting dog can get injured during training and competitions.
  • Collies are not indestructible, and accidents can happen.

Tips for choosing the best insurance for Border Collies

Here are some tips for finding the best pet insurance for your Border Collie:

  • Research different policies: Different companies will offer different policies. Do your research to find a cover that suits your needs.
  • Read reviews: Make sure the insurance company you decide on have a good reputation and plenty of real, positive reviews.
  • Research what is covered by your policy: Many health conditions may be excluded, so make sure to check that your policy covers possible health problems you may face in the future. Check how many claims you can file and if your monthly premiums may change in the future.
  • Find coverage specific to you: Do you want emergency cover or cover for annual vet visits? Make sure you find a plan that suits your needs. Consult your vet for any potential diseases your Border Collie may develop, like the risks of a relatively rare blood disorder, metabolic and digestive disorders, or heart diseases.
  • Decide how cost-effective the plan is: Lower premiums may be tempting, but these plans often have very limited coverage and will end up costing you money. Your premium will depend on your type of plan and type of deductible.
  • Take out cover while your dog is still young: Older dogs are often not eligible for insurance due to pre-existing conditions. Even a healthy adult dog will cost more to insure than younger dogs.
  • Ask for discounts: Some insurance companies will offer discounts if more than one dog is enrolled on the plan.

What Is The Lifespan Of A Border Collie?

A Border Collie’s life span is, on average, 10 – 14 years.

Final Thoughts on Border Collie Health Issues

Border Collies are generally healthy dogs. Most breeders will diagnose breeding dogs with potential health conditions and then screen puppies for the same conditions.

Most hereditary problems in herding breeds can be treated or completely cured with the help of a vet. To make sure your dog lives a long and happy life, always look out for changes in its behaviour, and make sure you know what potential diseases could affect your dog.
