The Siberian Husky is a purebred dog with a beautiful and majestic appearance that is largely due to its magnificent coat.
In this guide, we’ve taken a look at some of the most common coat colours in Huskies to get you up to speed.
The Siberian Husky breed features a wide range of colours, including black, grey, red, and agouti, each offering a unique appearance.
Black Huskies have a bold and dramatic look, while grey can vary from light silver to deep charcoal, often giving a wolf-like appearance. Red Huskies are particularly eye-catching, showcasing warm, copper tones that stand out beautifully. Agouti Huskies, with their mix of colours and wild appearance, add to the breed’s diversity. Huskies may also have white markings on their face, chest, and legs, further enhancing their expressive features.
This is one of the most common coat colours in the Husky breed. The black and white pattern of the coat is a black base with white markings. Sometimes, the black colour lightens and has a silvery or blue tone and in this case, the dog may be referred to as a silver and white husky.
An Agouti Husky has a dark-coloured undercoat and a lighter outer coat that can be a variety of colours. The pattern is often referred to as wild or wolflike due to its characteristic agouti markings and you may hear these dogs referred to as a wolf grey Husky.
The red in a red and white Husky’s coat can vary from a deep, reddish brown to light red or light orange. Usually, there are no black points in this type of coat colour.
Grey and white Huskies have a similar colour pattern to the black and white coat but the black is instead grey. The grey colour can appear silver or have a yellowish tint which can give the appearance of them having a silver coat.
The sable-coated Siberian Husky has an undercoat with red or tan tones that can often resemble the colour of copper. The top coat has hairs that are red at the bottom but that turn to black at the tips.
The white Siberian Husky has a pure white coat but there may sometimes be some black guard hairs mixed in. If this is the case, it will be more of a dull white Husky coat colour.
The Black Husky usually has a coat that is fully jet black but it can also be a very dark grey colour.
This Siberian Husky coat colour is the same pattern as the black and white coat but the black is a warm shade of brown instead.
This coat colour has a black base with white and tan markings interspersed around the dog’s body.
For a Husky to have a merle pattern coat it means it had to receive the merle gene from one of its parents. Merle patterns come in a variety of colours and cause the fur to be spotted or mottled. Huskies with this gene are more at risk of developing serious health issues later in life.
The Australian National Kennel Council, the American Kennel Club and the Siberian Husky Club of America all recognise nine coat colours as the breed standard for Huskies. These are agouti and white, black, black and white, black, tan and white, brown and white, grey and white, red and white, sable and white, and white.
Any other coat colours are not recognised such as brindle Huskies, merle Huskies and the pure red Husky.
Whatever colour of Husky you choose you can be sure that your pooch will be adorable and beautiful. If you’re planning to use your Husky to perform in dog shows then you’ll need to make sure that its coat is one that is accepted as being within the breed standard.
Aside from this, the colour choice will entirely be down to your own preference.
For most Huskies, there will be little change in the colour of their coats as they age other than the shade becoming slightly lighter as they grow into an adult. One thing that is more likely to alter with age is their eye colour.
All Husky puppies are born with blue eyes but many of them will darken with age and turn to a shade of brown.
All Husky coat colours are beautiful in their own unique way and choosing your favourite one could actually be a bit tricky. However, whichever colour you decide on it’s guaranteed that your pooch will have an adorable appearance.
