How Much Do Rottweilers Shed?

Rottweilers shed moderately throughout the year, with several excessive shedding seasons.

The shedding season is predominantly during spring when loose hair from the undercoat that was grown during winter is shed. Some dogs shed during spring and fall because of new hair growth during winter and summer.

This can look concerning when large clumps of hair fall out, but shedding is important for a healthy coat.

There are also several other reasons why your Rottie may be losing a lot of dog hair:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Allergic reactions which irritate your dog’s skin
  • Changes to your dog’s routine
  • Skin diseases
  • Medication
  • Dietary changes
  • Bathing with incorrect shampoo

If you are concerned about excessive shedding, don’t hesitate to consult your local veterinarian to rule out or identify any underlying health issues.

Do Rottweilers Shed More During Certain Seasons?

Rottweilers are double-coated dogs that shed throughout the year.

During spring you will notice an increase in shedding when the old coat is replaced with new hair. Shedding can also be a result of a poor diet or allergies.

Generally, a Rottweiler will shed twice a year, but some dogs will shed more frequently. Dogs with longer hair on their outer coat will have the appearance of shedding more because the long hair is more visible.

Some dogs may also “reverse shed”, which means they experience excessive hair loss during winter.

Do Rottweilers Shed More as Puppies?

Rottweiler puppies do not shed more than adult dogs. A very young puppy will only shed moderately, but their soft fluff does not fall out nearly as much as the thick undercoat of an adult Rottweiler.

You can lightly brush your Rottweiler puppy to remove any loose fur, but make sure to not damage the skin.

What Type of Hair Do Rottweilers Have?

Rottweilers have thick double coats. The outer layer is either short or wavy coat. The undercoat is thick and coarse.

Most Rottweiler coats are straight, although wavy fur is fairly common, and some can have curly fur on their back legs.

Rottweiler Shedding Tips: How To Minimise

Here are some tips to minimise shedding:

Brush regularly

Brushing your dog regularly with a slicker brush will help remove dead hair in its double coat.

You should brush your Rottweiler at least once a week. Brushing will not only remove dead fur but also help spread natural oils, which will help your Rottie maintain healthy skin.

Bathe with dog shampoo

You should bathe your dog with good quality dog shampoo. A hypoallergenic shampoo is best as it will not irritate your dog’s skin and leave your Rottie’s coat feeling soft and healthy.

Check your dog’s diet

A diet containing a lot of protein may result in more frequent shedding. You should find a diet that works for your dog while providing all the nutrition it requires.

Your Rottweiler may also be allergic to certain ingredients in its food, which results in dry skin and loose hair. Opt for a grain-free kibble with plenty of natural ingredients and no fillers.

Provide a dietary supplement

Providing your dog with supplements that contain omega fatty acids and probiotics will reduce the amount of pet hair around your living quarters.

Are Rottweilers Hypoallergenic?

Rottweilers are not hypoallergenic dogs. They shed a lot throughout the year and have two excessive shedding seasons in the fall and spring. Along with the fur, they also shed dander, which can trigger allergies in humans.

Rottweilers also slobber and drool a fair amount, so people that are allergic to dog saliva should preferably avoid this breed altogether.

Final Thoughts on Rottweiler Shedding

Rottweilers may have a short coat, but their undercoat means that they will shed fur throughout the year. Excessive shedding will occur during the shedding seasons, and although you can manage the amount of hair shed by brushing and a healthy diet, Rottweilers are not well suited to those with dog allergies.

If your dog sheds a lot outside of fall and spring, this may be an indication that something else is wrong, so it is best that you consult with your vet if you have any concerns.
