If you’ve had your eye on the Poodle breed, you will likely want to know how much space it will take up in your home. This will actually depend on the type of Poodle that you are interested in, as there are multiple different types of Poodles that come in various different sizes.
Wondering just how big each type of Poodle gets? Our comprehensive guide will give you this information, as well as how much your dog should weigh if it is healthy.
The Toy Poodle stands between 25 and 28 cm when fully grown. The Miniature Poodle will grow to between 28 and 38 cm tall when fully grown, and the Standard Poodle will stand between 45 and 62 cm tall.
If your dog is slightly smaller or larger than these measurements specified by the American Kennel Club, then you shouldn’t worry too much, as there are often outliers, and your dog is still likely rather normal.
The time it takes for your dog to reach its full size will often depend on how large it is supposed to be when it is full-grown. Toy Poodles tend to reach their full size by the time they are between six and seven months old, as they are not very large and, therefore, need less time to grow.
Miniature Poodles will reach their full size and stop growing when they are between the ages of seven and twelve months old, as they are slightly larger than Toy Poodles. Standard Poodles are the largest breed and can, therefore, take up to 2 years to reach their full size! Most of their growth will be complete when they are around 6 months old, though, and they will likely just be putting on slightly more weight at that stage.
The ideal weight of your dog will once again depend on what type of Poodle you have, as Miniature and Toy Poodles will weigh significantly less than Standard Poodles. When fully grown, a Toy Poodle should not weigh more than 4.5kgs at the most, and if your dog is smaller than the specified height measurements, then it should weigh even less.
Miniature Poodles should only weigh slightly more than this, as when fully grown, they should weigh between 5.4 and 9kgs, once again depending on how tall they stand. While the Standard Poodle is the largest and a relatively large dog overall, they should only weigh between 20 to 32kgs, as they were bred to be lithe hunting dogs originally.
All Poodles can become obese if they overeat; however, it affects the Standard Poodle the most, as it has longer legs, so excess weight could cause its joints to suffer. The Poodle coat can deceive owners into thinking their dogs are thinner than they are, so thankfully, there are a few other ways to check.
Your Poodle’s chest should be wider than its abdomen, and its stomach should taper off after its deep chest. If your dog’s underbelly is a straight line, then it could be considered overweight. This means you need to cut down on your dog’s dog food and give it more exercise. Poodles have an extensive history in dog sports so they won’t oppose this idea.
If you want your Poodle puppy to grow up to be healthy, then you will need to ensure that it is fed high-quality, age-appropriate dog food. Giving a Standard Poodle food with too much calcium in it at a young age could cause it to develop hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. If you are unsure about what food to give and portion sizes, you can consult with your local vet.
Poodles come in Toy, Miniature, and Standard sizes. There is also a Medium Poodle, but this breed is not officially recognised by any Poodle club.
A Standard Poodle should stand between 45 and 62 cm tall and weigh between 20 and 32 kg.
Experts have noted that the Standard Poodle or Duck Dog tends to have the least health concerns out of all of the different Poodle breeds.
Poodles are beautiful dogs by nature and appearance. Adding one of these pups to your family is a great opportunity. That said, you need to know what you’re in for. If you are interested in getting a Poodle of any size, you should contact the national breed club to find out what breeders are nearby.
