If you’re planning to add a Labradoodle to your family, there are many things you need to consider, including the colour of your new furry friend’s coat.
Labradoodles come in a huge range of beautiful colours and patterns, so it’s helpful to become familiar with these, as well as how they could possibly change over time. This way you’ll know what to expect as your Labradoodle puppy matures.
The most common colours include cream, chocolate, and black, each bringing a unique look to this hybrid breed.
In addition to these popular shades, Labradoodles can also be found in various combinations, such as apricot, red, and even phantom patterns, where two colours are paired together. Their coats can vary from wavy to curly, adding to their individual character.
The Labradoodle comes in an array of different colours. Here are some of the Labradoodle colors you’ll find.
The most popular Labradoodle coat colour is Golden. These dogs are also known as Apricot Labradoodles. Their coats resemble a rich, ripe apricot colour, and they typically have a black nose.
Red Labradoodles are incredibly attractive and harder to find. This colour is similar to Apricot, but their coats boast a richer pigment with a distinct, slightly darker red hue.
Black Labradoodles are typically solid black with no other colour markings. Their nose pigment, paw cushions, and eyes are also black – giving this dog a striking appearance. A puppy born with a black coat may fade to a more grey hue over time.
Chocolate Labradoodles include Cafe, Milk Chocolate, Latte, Lavender, and Parchment. They can either come with brown eyes or blue eyes (which are rare) and a rosy-hued, brown nose.
Cream (or tan) Labradoodles have an iconic beige-coloured coat, that sometimes boast gold, caramel (light yellow), or apricot markings on the face or paws.
The beautiful Blue Labradoodle is more of a rare occurrence. They are generally born with a black coat, which fades to a lilac appearance which tranforms into a more grey, smoky blue tone as they mature.
Similar to Blue Labradoodles, Silver Labradoodles are usually born much darker. This rare pup comes in varying shades – ranging from light grey to dark charcoal.
Parti Labradoodles have 2 different colours, which both take up 50% of their coat. For example, brown and white or apricot and black. To achieve this look, plenty of DNA testing is required to ensure the correct genes are present – making this Doodle a rare colour.
A Tuxedo Labradoodle, as the name suggests, has a solid black coat with white patches on his neck and chest, just like a tuxedo. This colour and pattern combination is also considered incredibly rare.
Sable Labradoodles are typically born with a darker coat that transitions into lighter shades once the puppy reaches adulthood. Their base coat is usually cream, tan, or apricot, with darker tips at the ends of the hair.
Phantom Labradoodles have a distinct colour pattern where the base colour is dark, and have lighter, sharply defined markings above their eyes and around their muzzle.
The Brindle Labradoodle is a mix of both lighter and darker colours, with the lighter colour being presented as stunning stripes (like a tiger) across its body.
Despite the Australian Labradoodle being massively popular, this breed is a hybrid and is therefore not registered or recognised by the Australian National Kennel Club.
However, the Australian Labradoodle Association recognizes all the Labradoodle colours mentioned above.
The best Labradoodle coat colour all comes down to personal preference.
It’s good to keep in mind that all Labradoodles tend to share a similar, wonderful temperament, regardless of their appearance – which is what counts at the end of the day.
In most cases, a Labradoodle puppy will change colours by the time they get their adult coat, which is between 6 – 8 months. This is due to the fading genes, which are inherited from the pup’s Poodle ancestors.
You can expect the fading to be more apparent in darker-coloured Labradoodles, such as Black or Chocolate, as well as the Sable Labradoodle, which is almost certain to carry the fading gene.
Black Labradoodle puppies tend to fade into grey, silver, or blue tones, while Chocolate Labradoodles usually end up cream, tan, or silver-coloured.
Choosing a Labradoodle dog can be a difficult decision when they come in so many different beautiful colours and patterns.
Whether you choose a Doodle that is born Milk Chocolate-coloured or perhaps a Black and White Tuxedo Labradoodle, you can look forward to the fact that each one of these wonderful dogs is absolutely adorable with a unique and loving personality to match.
