How Much Should I Feed My Irish Wolfhound Each Day?

One Irish Wolfhound feeding chart and diet might not work for another doggo. That being said, there are certain guidelines you can follow to ensure your giant Wolfhound is receiving their necessary nutrients. Sticking to a regular feeding schedule and avoiding free feeding for this breed is best.

Puppies

A slow-growth diet is highly recommended for Irish Wolfhound puppies. Puppies will need to eat about 3-4 meals each day – you can give them a mix of kibble and raw food. From about five months old, your pup should be eating 2200 calories per day.

Adults

Giant breed dogs will require a lot more food in a day. However, your dog’s food should be appropriate to its size, activity levels, and metabolism.

A good diet for an adult dog should consist of two cups of dry dog food or kibble, with half a cup of raw meat, soup, eggs or canned or wet food. You should feed them this twice a day.

They should have a daily caloric intake of 2,840 calories. You could also split their food into 3 to 4 meals a day.

Seniors

You can feed your older Irish Wolfhound a little less than an adult since he won’t need as much energy. You don’t want to feed him too much food that he can’t burn off due to not being active enough.

You could feed them 2,450 calories daily, between 3-4 meals.

Pregnant

Keep your pregnant Irish Wolfhound on her regular rations until she is about six weeks pregnant. You can then increase her feeding amount by 10% every week until she gives birth.

Raw, Fresh, or Commercial Food: Which is Best for My Dog’s Diet?

Giant breeds often need a lot of food to nourish their bodies fully, and regardless of the type of food you feed them, you will likely need to include supplementation into your dog’s diet.

Mixing commercial, raw, and fresh food is a great idea. They need about 18% protein per day, which could be from fish, chicken wings, eggs, or some raw meaty bones.

5% of their diet should include fat and nutritional extras like sweet potatoes and carrots mixed with commercial dog food. This makes up a delicious and nutritious meal for your gentle giant.

FAQs

Can I give my Irish Wolfhound treats?

Yes, you can. It’s best to keep the treats to a minimum, though. Rather than giving them sweet treats, give them fresh meat in their bowl or extra raw chicken occasionally. Instead, feed them more protein and fat.

What should Irish Wolfhound not eat?

Irish Wolfhounds and most other dogs shouldn’t eat grapes, avocados, cherries, and raisins. These can lead to various health issues, from vomiting to kidney failure. You should also avoid corn, wheat, and sugar alternatives like xylitol.

Are Irish wolfhounds fussy eaters?

Some may be slightly fussy, while others will happily eat anything and everything.

Final Thoughts on feeding a Groodle

To raise a healthy dog, it’s best to stick to a suitable feeding schedule. You should note that you should keep your dog on a diet suitable to their individual needs. Large dog breeds thrive on a meat meal with tons of protein and fats.

Give your doggo enough food and nutrition, and you’ll have a happy and healthy pup!
