About the Corgi Inu

The Corgi Inu is a mixed breed dog that is the product of mixing a Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a Shiba Inu. These dogs have inherited traits from both the Shiba Inu and the Corgi, which are most desirable for those looking for an affectionate dog that makes the perfect furry companion.

Another name for the Corgi Shiba Inu mix is Shiba Corgi. Despite this breed having the label as being designer dogs, they have been known to appear in shelters and rescues. If you think you might be interested in getting one of these dogs, then make sure to check your local shelters first. Every dog deserves a loving home, so you should always consider adopting first.

The Shiba Corgi is described as being extremely alert, making them ideal for those looking for a dog to keep watch at night. They will be the first to sound the alarm if any unwelcome visitors come near your home.

The Shiba Corgi mix is among the group of intelligent dogs ,which makes them relatively easy to train. They get on well with people when trained properly, but they do prefer to live with fewer family members. They also get on well with other dogs and enjoy plenty of attention and affection.

The Shiba Corgi mix is not one of the purebred dogs like their parents, the purebred Shiba Inu and Corgi. This means that they are not recognised by the American Kennel Club; however, they are recognised by the Dog Registry of America as well as the American Canine Hybrid Club.

What is the history & origin of the Corgi Inu?

This designer dog breed has mainly been around since the 2000s – the Shiba Inu Corgi mix is thought to have originated in North America. Breeders wanted to create a dog that had similar features to Shiba Inu but with the friendliness of the Corgi.

The Shiba Corgi mix is just that, making them a good family dog that is still independent but enjoys the company of others and lots of love and affection. The Shiba Corgi mix is not high maintenance dog and will be happy in a small home with loving owners.

What is a Corgi Inu breed?

A Corgi Inu is a mix of two dog breeds – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Shiba Inu. Sometimes known as the Shiba Corgi, these dogs can be from the same litter but have very different personalities. If they take more of their traits from the Corgi, then they are more likely to be outgoing and silly. On the other hand, if the Shiba Corgi puppy takes most of the traits from the Shiba Inu, then they can be a little more independent and hesitant around strangers.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi mix will make a great guard dog, regardless of the traits they take from their parents. This hybrid dog is described as being small to medium-sized, but they do have a large store of energy. They are also pretty smart, which means they need a good amount of daily exercise as well as mental stimulation.

Shiba Inus were originally bred as herding dogs which means they enjoy spending time outdoors and have an instinctive nature to herd. It is important to train them early so this natural behaviour doesn’t get out of hand when around other dogs and small children in the park.

Who is a Corgi Inu best for?

The Shiba Corgi mix is best suited in a small family or even with a single person that enjoys walks and has plenty of attention and love to show them. Shiba Inus have lots of energy that needs to be burned throughout the day. If you don’t think you can make time for walks each day, then this might not be the breed for you.

Because these dogs are fairly smart, training them is quite easy. They enjoy mental stimulation, so if you turn the obedience training into a game, they will be happy to play along. Corgi Shiba Inu Hybrid dogs form strong attachments to a few members of the family. They are very loyal and can be quite protective of those they consider loved ones.

This protective nature makes them ideal dogs to keep watch at night and alert the household to the presence of any unwanted visitors. Their pointed ears and incredible hearing mean that they will hear any disturbances before you and will wake up to make sure you know about it.

After a long walk in the park, the Shiba Corgi will be happy to snuggle up on the couch and fall asleep with their family. Despite these dogs having a fox-like appearance, they are playful and affectionate, eager to please, and spend most of their time around their loved ones.

Corgi Inu Grooming & Shedding

You’ll find the Shiba Inu Corgi to be quite a heavy shedder – be prepared to follow these designer dogs around picking up bits of their fur – they definitely get this from their Shiba Inu parent. Daily brushing will be necessary; unfortunately, for anyone with allergies, this might not be the best dog for you.

Do Corgi Inus bark a lot?

The Shiba Corgi mix is described as having a moderate tendency to bark. Some of the reasons that your Shiba Corgi mix may start howling include if they feel threatened or a need to be protective. One of the ways to reduce this behaviour is to train them when they are young with early socialisation. This will get them used to being around other people and dogs, so they don’t feel threatened by the presence of strangers.

What is the average weight & height of a Corgi Inu dog?

This Shiba Inu Corgi mix is a medium-sized dog, as expected, considering its parent breeds (the Shiba Inu and Welsh Corgi) aren’t the largest of dogs. They weigh in at around 7.7 – 12.2kgs and have been found to be 23 – 38cms tall. You might find some Corgi Inus to be taller/shorter and even heavier/lighter.

Are Corgi Inus easy to train?

Like Pembroke Welsh Corgis, The Shiba Inu is a smart dog which makes training them quite easily and also rewarding. They enjoy completing tasks and following commands. They are also eager to please, so the training process has been described as quite enjoyable.

How do Corgi Inus behave? A look at their temperament and personality

Corgi Inus have quite an interesting personality. The reason for this is that it can vary a lot between each individual dog. Depending on what parent they take most of their personality traits from, they can have very different temperaments.

Most Corgi Inus have a mix of both parent personalities, which usually makes them silly and outgoing but sometimes standoffish and reserved around new people. Regardless of their personality, every Shiba Corgi mix enjoys attention and affection from loved ones.

If they feel like they aren’t getting enough attention and are left on their own for too long, they can display some antisocial behaviours. This can result in them barking a lot more and lead to some destructive behaviours. For this reason, they shouldn’t be left on their own for long periods of time, so you don’t come home to a ripped-up sofa!

Does the Corgi Inu have any common health issues?

The Corgi Shiba Inu mix, unfortunately, struggles with some of the same health issues as its parents – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Shiba Inu.

  • Elbow and Hip Dysplasia: These conditions can be a major issue for the Shiba Corgi. These genetic conditions can lead to joint pain and mobility problems.
  • Cataracts: This eye condition causes clouding of the lens, potentially affecting vision.
  • Degenerative Myelopathy: A progressive disease of the spinal cord that can lead to mobility issues.
  • Patellar Luxation: This condition involves dislocation of the kneecap, which can cause pain and difficulty walking.

It’s recommended to take your pet for regular check-ups, vaccinate them and treat them for parasites.

What is the lifespan of a Corgi Inu?

The life expectancy of the Corgi Inu is somewhere between 12 and 15 years.

How much does a Corgi Inu need to be fed?

The Corgi Inu should be given high-quality dog food which is formulated to that of a small dog with lots of energy. As they grow from a puppy to adult dogs, the amount of dog food they are given will increase. Contact your vet for advice on portion sizes and the type of food you should be giving them.

How much can you expect to pay for a Corgi Inu in Australia?

Shiba Inu mixes cost around $350 and $700. Remember to find pedigree breeders that can provide a full medical history of both parents.
