The Chilier is a designer dog breed that is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Chihuahua. This mixed dog breed is considered a small dog with long fur and large eyes.

A Chilier is a great companion dog, but this mixed breed dog loves to eat, and a responsible pet parent should ensure their dog maintains a healthy weight.

In this article, we will look at the ideal size and weight of the King Charles Spaniel-Chihuahua mixed breed.

How Big Is a Chilier Dog?

The Chilier breed is considered a small dog, as both parent breeds are small. There is no breed standard for these dogs as they are not purebred dogs (although it is recognised by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and International Designer Canine Registry), but these dogs are very small.

Chiliers weigh between 2.2 to 6.8 kilograms, depending on which of the parent breeds dominates and reach a height of 20 to 25 centimetres at the shoulders.

At What Age Does a Chilier Reach Its Full Size?

Puppies of all dog breeds seem to grow incredibly fast, but it must be noted that not all breeds grow at the same rate. Smaller breeds, like the Chilier and other popular dog breeds of smaller stature, tend to reach their full size much faster than large breeds.

At 6 months, your Chilier pup will be about 75% of its total size, and by 12 months, it will have reached its full size.

What Is the Ideal Weight For a Chilier?

The ideal weight of your Chilier is between 2.2 to 6.8 kilograms. There is no breed standard for this dog, so it is up to pet owners to make sure their dog is not overweight.

How to Make Sure a Chilier Isn’t Overweight

It is important for all dogs to maintain a healthy weight to reduce health issues (like hip dysplasia) in the future. Chiliers are small and prone to weight gain, but there are some things you can do to ensure your little family dog does not become obese:

  • Feed them a balanced diet
  • Make sure they get plenty of daily exercise. If you do not have a yard, take your Chilier to the dog park each day to run around off the leash
  • Make sure to frequently engage with this playful breed. Playing fetch, tug-of-war, or playfully wrestling them will keep this active little dog fit and healthy
  • Only give your Chilier puppy healthy, low-calorie treats as a reward
  • Make feeding time a game by moving their food bowl around, using snuffle mats or puzzle toys

Ensuring Your Chilier Grows Properly

Making sure your Chilier pup grows up to be a healthy adult dog is very important. Here are some things you can do to ensure your puppy gets the best start in life:

  • Find high-quality puppy food. You should ideally feed your puppy dog food aimed at small-breed puppies. If you are uncertain which food to go for, as your vet or vet shop assistant. You want food that promotes healthy growth in your pup (not food for adults)
  • Build a relationship with your vet. At the start of its life, your puppy will probably spend a lot of time at the vet. When you first get your pup, you should take it to the vet for an exam. Your puppy will also require vaccinations and desexing within the first few months. Your vet will also help you to identify health problems early on. Consider getting pet insurance to cover vet bills
  • Vaccinate your pup. Responsible dog owners will vaccinate their puppies and continue with annual vaccinations as their puppy grows

FAQs

How can I tell if my Chilier is underweight?

Chiliers are fluffy dogs, and it can be hard to tell by looking at your dog if it is underweight. The easiest way to see if your Chilier is underweight is to feel its ribs. If you can feel each rib and the spaces between the ribs clearly, your Chilier might be underweight.

Can I give my Chilier puppy treats?

Yes, but Chilier’s parent breeds are prone to obesity, so feed high-quality, low-calorie treats sparingly. But do so sparingly. Over-feeding your pup treats can often lead to behavioural issues down the line.

How do I know if my Chilier weighs too much?

If your Chilier weigh 20% more than their ideal weight, then they are considered obese.
