How Much Should I Feed My Chihuahua Each Day?

Depending on its life stage, Chihuahuas will require  different diets that meet their nutritional needs as well as caloric needs; for more information, see below.

Puppies

Puppies should get about a quarter to 3/8 of a cup per day, split into several meals to avoid bloating.

Adults

Adult dogs should be fed twice a day with about 3/8 to 0.5 a cup with either wet canned food or easily chewable kibble, as their teeth are not very strong.

Seniors

As senior dogs have lower energy levels and therefore require less food, feed them between 1/4 and 3/8 of a cup per day and switch to highly-nutritious wet food only.

Pregnant

Increase your pregnant bitch’s food intake by about 15 to 20% daily.

Raw, Fresh, or Commercial Food: Which is Best for My Dog’s Diet?

Your Chihuahua’s diet can consist of any of the above, as long as you keep your Chihuahua’s health and digestive system as well as nutritional requirements in mind.

High-quality dog food does not always have to be expensive, and sometimes you can prepare the best dog food at home in your kitchen.

FAQs

If you still have questions about Chihuahua feeding, you’ll find all the answers below!

Can I give my Chihuahua treats?

Yes, you can give your Chi some well-deserved treats now and then. Just make sure they reflect the healthy diet you are trying to feed your Chihuahua, and keep in mind that too many treats can make your Chihuahua gain weight and cause health concerns.

What should Chihuahuas not eat?

Chihuahuas should never eat any human food or table scraps, such as cheese, chocolate, or grapes. On top of that, no avocados, raisins or artificial colourings.

Are Chihuahuas fussy eaters?

Chihuahua owners often complain about their Chis being more prone to being picky eaters than other dogs, but many times it is actually due to your Chihuahua just not being that hungry, as these small dogs really do eat quite a small amount of food per day.

If your Chihuahua is not wanting to eat its dog food but remains a healthy weight, you should not worry too much about it.

How much water do Chihuahuas need?

These little dogs drink about 1/8 of a cup per half a kilo of body weight. Always keep fresh water available within reach for your dog.

Final Thoughts on feeding a Chihuahua

Canine nutrition can be a tricky topic, and a dog’s diet is vital for your pup to lead a healthy life. There is plenty of option when it comes to Chihuahua dog food, but keep in mind that not all dog foods will be enjoyed by your pup, and it might take some trial and error to find what works for you and your Chihuahua.
