This beautiful little dog, named after King Charles II, has become one of Australia’s most popular small dog breeds. Its sweet nature and even temper match its small stature, and this combination also makes it one of the most gentle dogs a family could get. But how small is this regal little lap dog?

If you have questions about the size of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, you’ve come to the right place to find out more.

How Big Is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dog?

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is considered to be a toy breed, which makes it tiny. Toy breeds are small dogs that really do look like accessories or toys- think of all the celebrities and socialites who have carried a chihuahua in their bags.

The Cavalier King is the largest dog of such breed. They make perfect lap dogs for those who live in apartments because the average Cavalier grows to a height of 30-33 centimetres, with their weight varying between 5.9 to 8.2 kilograms.

At What Age Does a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Reach Its Full Size?

The Cavalier King Charles spaniel has a standard size. However, this is also affected by factors such as how much exercise the dog gets, their nutrition, genetics, and age. Small dogs reach their final growth faster than larger dogs.

The miniature (“teacup”) Cavalier King Charles spaniel is smaller than the original. For its small size, the Cavalier King is often mixed with a smaller breed like the miniature American Eskimo, which is 22-30 centimetres. Alternatively, some may have a dwarfism gene that stunts their growth.

A purebred Cavalier King will do most of its growth in the first 8-9 months.

After 12 months, it will have reached its adult weight. An adult dog can continue to grow only in weight, not in height.

What Is the Ideal Weight For a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

The breed standard for the adult Cavalier is 5.4-8.2 kg. The ideal weight for the Cavalier puppies depends on their age and gender. A puppy weight calculator can also help estimate your Cavalier’s size if you want a more accurate estimate.

  • 3 Months: At this age, the weight of the King Charles Spaniel puppy should be 2.5 kg for females and 3.5 kg for males.
  • 4 Months: Cavalier female puppies should have an increase in weight to around 3.4 kg and the males to 4.5kg
  • 6 Months: At six months, both male and female Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppies should start to weigh between 4.7kg- 6.4kg.
  • 12 Months: At 12 months, the Cavalier King should reach its adult weight.

How to Make Sure Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Isn’t Overweight

King Charles Spaniels are very energetic as puppies but start to move around less with age. It’s typically more difficult to get them to exercise after 2-3 years. If you’re not careful, this is when the weight gain will start to set in.

It’s essential to take them for regular walks or have them run around and play regularly. This will not only benefit their weight but also prevent possible health problems in the future.

It’s also essential to ensure your Cavalier King is properly fed. Cavalier Kings shouldn’t be fed carb-heavy foods, which will easily get stored as fat. They should be eating a nutritional and well-balanced diet that includes protein.

All dog breeds can have trouble keeping a healthy weight. To maintain a healthy weight, try not to over-indulge your puppy with treats, or consider getting special dog food created to aid weight loss.
