How Big Is a Bull Arab Dog?

The Bull Arab is a large dog breed that owes its sturdy and athletic stature to the fact that it was originally bred to catch wild pigs. Its large height and weight are also related to one of its ancestors, the English Bull Terrier, another large dog breed.

The size of the Bull Arab, or Australian Pig Dog, varies between males and females. Male Bull Arab dogs usually reach an adult height of between 63cm and 68cm, and females in the breed usually reach 60cm and 66 cm.

At What Age Does a Bull Arab Reach Its Full Size?

Due to its large size, the Bull Arab breed grows and develops more slowly than many other dogs. Whereas small dogs are usually fully grown by around 6 to 8 months, Bull Arabs don’t stop growing until they age between 12 and 14 months.

What Is the Ideal Weight For a Bull Arab?

As a large breed, you should expect your Bull Arab to weigh more than most dogs but it still may surprise you to learn just how much it’s supposed to weigh, particularly if you’re used to smaller dogs.

Male Bull Arabs will ideally weigh between 31kg and 40kg as adults, and females should weigh slightly less, at 29kg and 38kg. The Bull Arab was bred to be heavy as a pig-hunting dog that needed to be big and strong enough to kill wild boars.

How to Make Sure Your Bull Arab Isn’t Overweight

Like any other dog breed, there are only two ways to ensure that your Bull Arab stays at a healthy weight: diet and exercise. As it was bred as a hunting and herding dog, the Bull Arab is still a very active dog, and to keep it in shape, you’ll need to give your dog enough exercise.

The Bull Arab requires at least an hour of vigorous exercise each day in dog parks or the great outdoors. For this reason, the Bull Arab makes a great family pet for active families.

Unfortunately, many Bull Arabs are prone to weight gain, which can lead to various health issues. You should control your dog’s diet by feeding it high-quality dog food full of nutrients so that it has a long and happy life.

Ensuring Your Bull Arab Grows Properly

Your Bull Arab should grow into an adult that’s big and strong enough to herd wild animals and to take down a wild pig. To ensure it does, you should feed it high-quality kibble when it’s still a puppy that contains lots of calcium and omega fatty acids.

Once it’s an adult, you can feed it a mixture of wet and dry food to ensure it’s getting enough protein to keep it strong and energetic. If you’re concerned about your dog’s weight, you should take it to the vet for a checkup.

FAQs

How can I tell if my Bull Arab is overweight?

The easiest way to tell if your dog is overweight is to test if you can see and feel their ribcage. If you can’t, then this means they are carrying extra fat and are probably overweight.

What illnesses cause Bull Arabs to gain weight?

Several health conditions can cause your dog to gain weight. One of the more common ones is hypothyroidism, as one of the main symptoms is rapid weight gain.

How can I determine how big my puppy will be as an adult?

A simple formula that you can use to work out a rough estimate of how much your dog will weigh once it’s reached adulthood is to multiply its weight at 16 weeks old by two.

Final Thoughts on Bull Arab Size & Weight

As with all other breeds, Bull Arabs need their owners to pay close attention to their size and weight to ensure they grow properly and stay healthy. Weight and size issues can sometimes be a sign of certain health conditions, so if you’re ever concerned, take your pooch to the vet for a checkup.
