Common Boston Terrier Colours

The Boston Terrier is known for its charming compact frame and distinctive tuxedo-like appearance. The most common colour combinations include black and white, brindle and white, and seal (a dark brown that appears black) with white. These combinations typically feature a predominantly dark coat accented by bright white markings, giving the breed its characteristic look.

What Colours Do Boston Terriers Come In?

Boston Terriers are a popular breed. They also come in many unique colours. Here’s a list of all the colours you may find a Boston in.

Seal Boston Terrier

Seal Boston Terriers will not normally have a solid seal coat but will have a seal base with white markings. To fit the breed standard, the coat needs to be seal and white. In bright light, the colours of this coat will have an appealing copper shade.

Black and white Boston Terrier

The black and white Boston Terrier has a mainly black coat accented in white. Boston Terriers must have a black nose and dark brown eyes to be considered standard black and white.

Black Boston Terrier

The black Boston Terrier has a coat that is solid black but also has solid white markings on the paws or limbs, the centre of the face and chest.

Blue Boston Terrier

Blue Boston Terriers have become very popular recently, but this colour is not considered part of the breed standard.

The coat colour is the same as the black and white coat, but the black sections appear to be either grey, silver or medium blue.

This is mixed in with a white coat that gives the overall coat its light blue appearance.

Merle Boston Terrier

It is not possible for purebred Boston Terriers to be merle, and merle Boston Terriers are the result of mixing the Boston Terrier breed with other breeds.

The merle colour is not recognised by either the American Kennel Club or the Australian National Kennel Club.

Brindle Boston Terrier

The brindle coat will have a bi-colour pattern rather than one solid brindle colour. The brindle pattern is usually comprised of a brown base coat mixed with black hairs and stripes of colour that can be dark or light.

Lilac Boston Terrier

Lilac Boston Terriers have a coat that is light brown, but that appears to be lilac in certain lights. They are often born with blue eyes, which get darker with age.

Albino Boston Terrier

Albino Boston Terriers are often mistakenly thought to have a cream and white coat, but they are simply Boston Terrier dogs with no colouring. An albino may still be a purebred Boston Terrier, but one with no pigmentation.

What Colours Does the Australian National Kennel Council Recognise in Boston Terriers?

The only Boston Terrier breed coat colours recognised by the AKC and the ANKC are black, seal and brindle with white patches. Any other colours are considered to be outside of the breed standard.

This includes popular coat colours such as red and white and splash.

What Colour Boston Terrier Should I Choose?

Ultimately, what colour of Boston Terrier you choose will come down to your preferences, as there are many great options to choose from.

However, Bostons with a blue or merle coat have been known to be more at risk of certain health issues, so this is something to bear in mind when choosing a colour.

Also, if you’re planning for your Boston to perform in dog shows, they will need to have a coat colour that is recognised as any other colour would lead to disqualification from any competition.

Boston Terrier Puppy Coat vs. Adult Coat

Boston Terrier puppies are born with a soft and fuzzy puppy coat that they usually start to shed when they’re aged between 4 and 6 months.

As they shed their puppy coat, it will gradually be replaced by their adult coat, which will be coarser and thicker.

As they age, the colours of their coat will also usually become darker and a pale red Boston, for example, may change into a deeper, hazelnut colour as they age.

Final Thoughts on Boston Terrier Colours

Whichever colour of coat you choose, your Boston is guaranteed to be adorable and lovable. Certain coat colours can increase the risk of certain health issues in your Boston, but for the most part, you should feel free to choose whatever colour you love the most.
